Child Abuse Understanding Child Abuse

Child abuse involves any form of physical, emotional, or sexual harm, neglect, or exploitation of a child or youth under the age of 18. It can happen in the home, at school, in the community, or online—and is often committed by someone the child knows and trusts.

Types of child abuse may include:

  • Physical abuse (hitting, shaking, burning)
  • Sexual abuse or exploitation
  • Emotional abuse (verbal assaults, humiliation, threats)
  • Neglect (failing to provide basic needs such as food, safety, shelter, or medical care)

How Victim Services Can Help

Victim Services organizations in Ontario support children, youth, and families affected by abuse. Whether the abuse is current or has occurred in the past, supports are available to help survivors feel safe and begin healing.

Support may include:
  • Crisis intervention and emotional support for children and caregivers
  • Safety planning in collaboration with police and child protection agencies
  • Referrals to specialized trauma counselling or child and youth mental health services
  • Support navigating the criminal justice system, if charges are laid
  • Information on legal supports, including victim/witness assistance
  • Help accessing emergency financial aid through VQRP+ in eligible cases
  • Referrals to community programs for ongoing care and recovery

Victim Services also works closely with other agencies to ensure coordinated and child-centered support. The well-being and safety of the child is always the top priority.
